It took our team a couple of years to learn the “tricks of the trade” to be able to build a fast and reliable robot that could obtain 400 points. For those unfamiliar with FLL, it is part of FIRST, a non-for-profit organization whose mission is to inspire children and high-school students to become scientists and engineers by promoting friendly robotics competitions. The interesting matter is that robotics is only a small portion of the competition. The competition takes a holistic approach that gives the opportunity to its young participants to talk with real scientist and engineers while researching an innovation project. Participants also practice inter-team dynamics such as teamwork, planning, design and communication along with marketing and promotion. In today’s global world, Technologists need to be able to communicate clearly and graciously within their team and outside their team.
